Discovering Florence Through Photography

Course Description:
Students will explore the visual language of photography using Florence as their inspiration and backdrop. The course will examine such topics as Urban landscape, Portraiture,Time and Memory and Purpose of Place. These topics are structured to take full advantage of the experience of being in Florence, Italy. Class time will include visits to museums and galleries, field trips, technical demonstrations, darkroom work, group critiques and bookmaking. The course is open to all students with all levels of photographic experience. All students must have a 35mm film camera which functions in manual mode. Beginning students will master the basics of camera usage, film development and black and white printing. The more advanced students will be encourage to expand their personal photographic vision and skills through creating a portfolio of photographs base on their experiences in Florence.

Supplies List:
You are expected to have a 35mm camera that permits manual adjustment of shutter speeds and apertures. You will also be required to purchase your own b/w film and paper for the class.
You will shoot a minimum of 15 and likely up to 25 rolls of 36 exposure film.
Purchase 5 rolls of Kodak Tri-X – 400ASA, 5 rolls of Ilford HP5 – 400ASA, 5 rolls of FP4 - 125ASA, 3 rolls of Fuji Neopan 1600 ASA).
Purchase one box of 50 sheets of “9 x 12” black and white paper (Ilford Multigrade RC, pearl surface, glossy or matte finish).
Purchase 25 Negative sleeves.
Purchase a pair of plastic gloves.
Purchase a binder for your negatives.
Purchase a large folder or envelope for turning in photo projects.
Purchase a journal book.
Purchase a towel (used for the darkroom and developing film).
Purchase an apron (I suggest not wearing “good clothing” on the days that you will be working in the darkroom or developing film).
For safety reasons, all students must wear an apron and gloves when developing film.
