COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Themes and authors in the history of photography will be presented and examined, with an ample selection of visual aids. Multi-media lessons will solicit the active participation of the students, including visits to exhibitions and lectures given by invited artists/guest lecturers.

This lecture course introduces students to the history of photography in Europe and the United States from the late nineteenth century to the present. The primary task of the course will be to develop visual literacy and familiarity with the complex and contradictory genres of photographic images - between documentary and discourse, between mass culture and avant-garde art. The complexity between film and digital photography will also be discussed.
