Summer Courses

Book Arts/ Printmaking

summer session II

Credit hours: 3--Contact hours: 90

Dept: Art and Design

Instructor: Patricia Silva

Course Description: This intensive hands-on course will introduce students to the art of printmaking in relation to the creation of bookworks. Students will learn both printmaking and hand-bookmaking techniques which will culminate in the creation of original finished book works. Printmaking techniques we will explore include (though may not be limited to) linocuts and letterpress printing. Students will incorporate these techniques to create, at least, three to four individual one-of-a-kind books or editions. Book structures such as pamphlet stitch, accordion fold, hinged album, long-stitch and Japanese stab bindings will be introduced and students will incorporate their print works into these diverse book forms. Layout, pacing and narrative will also be discussed. Group and individual critiques will take place throughout the semester. If possible, fieldtrips will be organized to visit contemporary artists (bookbinders, printers or papermakers) in their studios as well as visits to museums and institutions in the area which maintain collections relevant to the art of the book and the print.

This course is open to all students with an interest in the book and print . Previous bookmaking and printmaking experience is helpful, but not required

Instructor: Patricia Silva received a BFA in Art History/Studio Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and a MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has also studied at the Centro del Bel Libro in Ascona, Switzerland.

Ms. Silva worked for 10 years as a graphic designer and art director in the publication industry before her interests led her to the field of Book Arts. She interned in the book conservation labs of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia under Hedi Kyle and of the Library Company in Philadelphia. She has also worked as a book conservation technician at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifact in Philadelphia under Glen Ruzicka.

Ms. Silva presently lives and works in Florence, Italy where she runs a private studio specializing in custom bookworks and limited edition artist’s books. She also teaches Book Arts with several universities and institutions including The University of Georgia, Fuji Studios, Syracuse University, the Maragoni Studios and SRISA.

In 1998 Ms. Silva was named a “Maestra Rilegatore” in the international bookbinding competition “100 Maestri Rilegatori per L”Infinito.” Ms. Silva’s work may be found in several collections both in the US and in Italy.

The city of Florence provides the backdrop to this intensive workshop, and there is frequent class time outside the studio in which to work on-site. The city itself - rich in history as the epicenter of the Italian Renaissance - is resplendent with some of the world's finest museums and monuments. The hill towns of Settingnano and Fiesole are only fifteen minutes away by car or bus and provide breathtaking panoramic views of the city from which the group will work. Two half-day guided walking tours of Florence, and an additional one of Siena, are included in the course and provide further opportunity for on-site work.
