Summer Courses

Garment Construction

Credit hours: 3--Contact hours: 90

Dept: Art and Design

Course Description:

This course is for students who are interested in fashion, learning to create garments, and the development of their own fashion ideas through sewing, draping and pattern making techniques.

Dresses designed and constructed by Basic Fashion Design students
Fall 2006

This is a basic course in garment construction and will cover the following techniques:
1) Draping: a technique that develops shapes and patterns by arranging the fabric directly on a dress form.
2) Pattern-making: a technique that develops shapes and patterns projected on paper, using body measurements ( chest, waist, neck-line, hips level, etc.)

Students will study garment construction rules using both draping and pattern-making. They will execute the basic bodice, skirts, sleeve, collars, necklines, and interfacings. Students will also develop a basic knowledge of sewing machine and basic stitches.

Following these techniques the student will be able to execute personal creative projects from the conceptual phase to the completion of the finished garment. Particular attention is given to the creative process of design, developing ideas from different sources of inspiration and following updated fashion trends.

At the completion of the course students will create original garments for the final project and student show. The photo below is the show organized and presented at a Florentine club, December, 2006.
