Santa Reparata Gallery of Art

Jonathan Hynd Exhibition, July 10 - September 5, 2008

Jonathan Hynd was born in Manchester England in 1950. Educated at Winchester College, and trained at the Architectural Association and St. Martins School of Art, he received his MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College London in 1983.
The works in this exhibition have taken their inspiration from Rome, the city where Hynd has been living and working since 1987. The materials too reflect the city in which - as he says - “space is densely filled with matter.” Discarded cardboard found on the streets has been glued to plywood, the surface then prepared with gesso and glue, and raw coloured pigments trowelled directly on. Where necessary, these are stripped back, and there continues a process of adding and subtracting until the image finds its own independence.
It is through this visible record of each painting’s development that the narrative emerges. In this way, both old and new ideas and events are sifted, layer upon layer, like the successive periods of history.
